Moms' Time Notes - August 24 ,2012

Announcements-Julie S.:

We start the morning with prayer time at 8:45.
We will be using the ACTS model for our prayer time (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication).

During prayer time, we will split into groups of 3 or 4. We will not be taking prayer requests at this time.

During our time of adoration, the focus will be on God's character. During the time of confession, we will keep our confession general and not get too specific. For the supplication portion, we want to be careful not to share something that someone wants to keep personal.

Master's Kids Moms will need to have a contact person on campus for when they are on field trips. Also, they will need to be sure and check their mailboxes weekly.

Calendars for the year are in your mailboxes.

Purple forms are in your mailbox if you are missing a form from Back to School night (or a form is incomplete).

Hospitality sheets are in your mailboxes. See the sheet for your assignments.

The hospitality table is set up by Carrie and Patti.

On the week of your assignment, you will get an e-mail reminder.

It is important that we all be faithful to serve in this area. If for some reason you forget your food assignment, there is a list of nearby places where you can pick up something.

It would be helpful if everyone brought along her own coffee cup.

If your child is in the nursery, please be sure to pick him or her up at 12:15.

On the back table, there is a signup sheet to bring meals to Lisa S., who is having surgery for two broken vertebrae next Wednesday 8/29. Please consider signing up even if you do not live in Santa Clarita. Christine R. would be happy get the meal from you on a Friday or Sunday and bring it to Lisa. Also, please remember to pray for the Sullivan family as both she and Sam recuperate from surgeries. You can also sign up for meals online at www.takethemameal.com password PSP.

The first blessing barn will be September 7. You may bring gently used items to share with others in the PSP. Please do not bring faded or torn clothes. Anything that is leftover must be picked up by the owner at 12:30.

Announcements-Megan B.(writing teacher):

The curriculum for writing is IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing)

Junior High will be using the Following Narnia series. They will learn how to analyze literature and to compare literary characters to historical figures.

Fifth and Sixth grades will be using the U.S. history based writing series, which moves from the exploration of the North American continent through the Gold Rush.

Third and fourth grade will be using All Things Fun and Fascinating, which deals with simpler, high-interest topics.

Classes will have a sharing time, so students can share their paragraphs. In third through sixth grade classes, they will be handing out tickets, so students can work on earning a party.

The junior high students opted to have no tickets. Students will be playing games to learn vocabulary. They will also have a list of banned words that they may not use in their writing.

The students need to bring a 3 ring notebook to class. Keep the student resource book at home with you.

Megan will be e-mailing homework assignments to you.

Students should bring their ring of cards, homework, pens and paper to class. They will be doing their writing with pens not pencils.

Remember, mom is the teacher.

If your student is having a problem, be sure to let Megan know (preferably not the night before an assignment is due).

Also, mom should read through the curriculum before Megan teaches it on Friday so that any questions can be addressed with Megan on Friday.

Moms are encouraged to sit in on class at any time and to active in your student's writing process.

For third and fourth grade students, you will need to walk the students through the key word outlining process for several lessons. It is fine to prompt them when necessary.

Encourage your fifth and sixth grade students to do their work.

For junior high school students, you should be part of the editing process.

Students will be writing rough drafts. They need to learn that writing something once does not mean it is finished. First drafts should be hand-written. This slows students down so they can think about what they are saying. The final drafts are handed in to be graded and should be typed and double-spaced. For final drafts, review the checklists. Ask questions of your student so he can fix his own errors.

Announcements-Christine R.:

Bring your Bible and PSP binder with you to class each week.

Plan on packing lunches for one more Friday. The Grace Grill should be ready to go on Friday, September 7.

Picture day will be on September 14. Envelopes to order pictures will be here in next week. Please have students wear their uniforms and not their "choosing gratitude" shirts.

You may buy teacher ID's for $5 and student ID's for $5. Teacher ID's may be used to purchase items at a teacher discount. Even if you are not purchasing pictures, all moms, students and teachers should have their pictures taken for yearbook.

A group e-mail will be sent out to everyone in PSP entitled "for PSP use only". This is for PSP related topics only. You should delete old rosters and start with the new one. The group list is not for funny stories or other topics not related to PSP. If you have questions about its use, ask Julie S. or Christine R.

Teachers and group leaders need to go through the rosters and enter the e-mail addresses of the people in their group or class only and send specific announcements to those people only, not the entire PSP. E-mail addresses should be entered in the Bcc category.

We are able to meet in the G130 room, which is a first. Please be neat so we can keep the privilege..

Moms and younger children should eat lunch inside the mom's room and leave the outside eating areas for seminary students and church staff.

 There is a contest for all students to memorize the theme verses for the year. 1 Thes. 5:16-18: Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." Candy will be passed out by the coordinators to students who can recite the reference and the verse through the end of September.

If your child does not stay for afternoon classes, pick him up in the gym by 1:10 on Fridays. Children with afternoon classes will be returned to the mom’s room at the conclusion of their classes. Note: Story time for siblings ends at 2:10.

Announcements Susan O.:
There are three major things to remember about field trips.

1) Be committed. Once you pay, your money cannot be refunded. Think about it before you sign up.

2) Be on time. Allow yourself extra time for traffic. Keep in mind we represent Grace Church. If you are sick, please call Susan and let her know.

3) Have fun! Remember, this counts as a school day.

There are approximately two field trips per month.

The first field trip is to the LA County Fair. There are no sign-ups for this field trip; just pick up a flyer and a packet.

Page one of the packet is your ticket.

Page two of the packet is the read to write program.

Students can earn up to six free rides by reading a book and writing a report for each book.

Kindergarten students may draw a picture about their books.

Redeem reports at the America's Kids Expo Hall.

Page three of the packet is for free milk. The start time for this field trip is 9AM, but you may arrive anytime from 9:00-12:00 and enter through the school entrance. Otherwise, you will need to enter through the entrance for the general public.

There will be sign up next week for Children's Hunger Fund, which is a great service opportunity for our students. This is for kindergarten and up.

There will also be a sign up for Legoland. Checks should be made out to Susan O'Connor.

Announcements not announced in mom’s time:

-Rachael O. has a new email. Please change it on your roster and on your email groups.

-Ted N. posted some marvelous pictures on his website of the Back To School Extravaganza.
Thank you Ted!

-the emails on the roster are underlined, making some of the underscored hard to distinguish. There are no spaces in emails, so any space on the email roster is an underscore. Sorry for the confusion.

-If your PSP child has food allergies, please email them to Christine, so we can make the whole group aware of them.
