Moms’ Time Notes - September 28, 2012

Announcements: 

·         Susan R. came to moms’ time to have everyone fill out a page for the homeschool heritage book.

o    If you did not get a form, Christine R. will have extra forms for you to fill out.

o    Please put them in Christine R’s mailbox, when they are complete, within the next 2 weeks.

o   If you did not bring a family photo to moms’ time for Susan, please e-mail one to her.

·         There will be a nursery substitute sign-up sheet, so that we can give some of the moms in the nursery a break.  If you are not overwhelmed and may be able to help in this way, please consider signing up.

·         Our Spanish teacher is in need of someone musically inclined (piano or guitar) to help out within the next few weeks by videoing five songs for the Spanish class.

·         On October 13, for the Ladies’ Fall Event, PSP moms will be meeting outside at the welcome center. You can sign-up in moms’ time to go with our group. However, you still need to pay and register on-line or at church (Grace Walk).

·         American Heritage Day will be the Friday before Thanksgiving break.

o   Next Friday, October 5, we will be discussing.

o   The government class students will be dressing up like different presidents. 

o   Business class students will be researching famous entrepreneurs.

o   The 5o States students will be choosing someone famous from one state.

o   The day will be set up like a museum. There will be no classes.

o   Everyone will be leaving at lunch time.

o    If you have any thoughts/ideas regarding Heritage Day, you can e-mail them to Christine Rush.

·         When the doors are shut during moms’ time, you can still enter.

o   To minimize distractions, come around to the side.  Don’t use the large doors in front.

o   Remember, even if it is prayer time, you can still come in.  Moms’ time is for your benefit so you can always enter. Even if you have a younger child with you, you can come in (unless there is a speaker, in which case you’d need to leave if your child started making noise).

Table Time

·         We had our first table time. We discussed chapter one of Choosing Gratitude. Before our discussion, Julie S. shared some thoughts on chapter one.

1)      Gratitude is a significant attribute. Having a thankful heart is an internal attitude. Thanklessness is often the characteristic of an unbeliever.

2)      Gratitude is a choice. It is hard work. We must strive to please God. Worship is also hard work and is Christ-focused. Whining is self-focused. Whining is not attractive to anyone. You cannot encourage each other if you are complaining. Thankfulness is contentment in God’s plan.  Complaining is our emotional rejection of God’s plan.

3)      Having a thankful heart is not dependent on our circumstances. It is something that we need to cultivate. Everything we have is a gift from the Lord.

·         Do not forget to work on Psalm 145:4, “One generation shall praise your works to another, And shall declare your mighty acts.”

Moms' Time Notes – September 21, 2012

Check List for Friday, Sept. 28-

Announcements

·         Dads’ and kids’ park day sign-up sheet will be in the moms’ room for another two weeks. The park day will be on October 13.

·         In your mailboxes, there were prayer request sheets.

o   You have this week to think about what your prayer request will be. Please fill them out for next week, September 28.

o   You will be exchanging them with someone at your table next week. That person will be your prayer partner for the next month.

·         Brenda will put out a sign-up sheet in the moms’ room for the women’s fall event, which is October 13.

o   This is for anyone who would like to attend with a group from PSP.

o   The group will meet somewhere on campus and go together.

o   If you sign up on the sign-up sheet, you will still need to register for the event on-line or at church on a Sunday morning.

·         Next week on September 28, Susan R. will be at PSP.

o    She is putting together a Legacy Book of homeschooling families at the church.

o   Please bring two copies of a family photo to PSP next week, or you can e-mail a family photo to Susan.

o   Around 10 AM next Friday, we will be filling out forms for the book.

·         Next week on September 28, Megan Brown will be holding a writing workshop at lunchtime. She will show a DVD on the writing program, Institute for Excellence in Writing. If you have a student in the writing class, please plan on attending. This will help you understand how to help your student better.

·         Please make sure you carefully read all PSP related e-mails.

o   If you have a question, please make sure you go through all the old PSP e-mails to be sure that question has not been answered already.

o   Make sure you have a folder to put all your important PSP information and documents.

o   Encourage your student to carefully keep track of all of his work and homework assignments.  If you have a question about PSP homework, do not wait until the last minute, or you may not get an answer. Start your PSP homework early in the week.

·         Next week (September 28,) at table time, we will start our discussion of Choosing Gratitude, chapter one. Please read chapter one this week. Also, work on memorizing Psalm 145:3.

·         If you need to meet up with your child during PSP, you need to find him or her. Do not have your child be responsible for finding you. Please communicate with your child’s coordinator and put the responsibility on yourself.

·         Susan O. sent out an e-mail survey regarding the Sacramento field trip.  Please complete the survey this week.

·         Make sure you are cleaning up your food plates each week and taking home the hospitality dishes that you brought.

·         Lost and found is at the end of the table in the moms’ room.

Moms' Time Notes - September 14, 2012

 Announcements:
 

In everyone’s mailbox was a green flyer for an upcoming dads’ and kids’ park day.

o This will be on Saturday, October 13, from 1-4 at Heritage Memorial Park in Sylmar.

o There will be no meal, just snacks.

o There will be a sign up sheet on the table in the moms’ room.

o Siblings are welcome to attend.

On next Friday, September 21, Lisa has some exciting craft projects planned for the moms. We will be starting them at 10AM.

There are now sheets in the field trip binder to sign up for the Peterson Museum and Griffith Observatory.

Susan O. will be sending out a survey to everyone regarding the Sacramento field trip. This will be to see if more people prefer staying one night or two nights.

Remember to sign up for a day to pray for PSP.

o Sign-ups are on the large poster on the table in the moms’ room.

o Write the day you sign up for on one of the bookmarks as a reminder to yourself.

Susan R. will be coming to PSP in two weeks on September 28.

o Susan is putting a book together of homeschooling families at the church.

o She will have two pages for everyone to fill out during moms’ time.

o Bring two copies (of the same) family photos with you, or if you would rather, you can e-mail them to Susan.

The women’s fall event will be on October 13, the same day as the PSP Dads’ and Kids’ park day. The women’s event will be in the morning. We can have a PSP group go to the event together.

We are memorizing Psalm 145:2 this week. Meditate on it this week. Think about what it means to bless the Lord each day.

It is fine to enter the moms’ room during prayer time or a speaker. Just make sure you are coming through the smaller (G134) room and not the large, squeaky door.

American Heritage Day is the Friday before the Thanksgiving break. Government students will be dressing as presidents. For younger students in the 50 States class, the research may involve picking a state and researching an important historical figure from that state. More details are forthcoming.

I.                   Reasons to Memorize Scripture

A.     Memorize Scripture because it is the Word of God

I Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness

 

Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

 

B.  Memorize Scripture to transform our minds.

Proverbs 23:7 “as a man thinks within himself, so is he.”

 

Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

 

Phil. 2:5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus

 

Rom 8:5-6  For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

 

I Peter 1:13  Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

 

Phil. 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

C.       Memorize Scripture to help fight against sin.

Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you;let me not wander from your commandments. I have stored up your word in my heart,that I might not sin against you

 

D.        Memorize Scripture to evangelize the lost

I Peter 3:15…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

 

Romans 10:17  So faith comes through hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

 

E.   Memorize Scripture to prepare for persecution and suffering

2 Timothy 3:12   Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

 

Romans 5:3-5   Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

 

Romans 8:17   and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

 

F.  Memorize Scripture to obey the command to meditate on Scripture

Joshua 1:8  This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

 

Psalm 1:1-3  Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

 

G.  Memorize Scripture to preach the gospel to yourself daily

      If there’s anything in life that we should be passionate about, it’s the gospel. And I don’t mean passionate only about sharing it with others. I mean passionate about thinking about it, dwelling on it, rejoicing in it, allowing it to color the way we look at the world. Only one thing can be of first importance to each of us. And only the gospel ought to be.

H.  Memorize Scripture to better train your children

Deuteronomy 6:6-7  And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

 

I.        Memorize scripture to encourage other believers and for comfort

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Moms' Times Notes - September 7, 2012

Announcements:

This Friday:  Katie Talcott is speaking on memorizing scripture at 10:30.  You won’t want to miss it!

·         We want to bathe our PSP in prayer.  Psalm 127:1  says, “Unless the Lord builds the house (or the PSP), they labor in vain who build it.” 

·         Pick a day during the week to be praying for PSP and sign up for that day on the poster board in mom’s time.  Write that day on the back of your “pray without ceasing” bookmark.  Bookmarks will be on the table again this week. Commit to praying this year for the PSP, for our church leadership and the decisions they make for our group, for homeschooling, and for each other.

·         Everyone got a “thankful journal” this week. Start it on Monday. Every day, try to write down five things you are thankful for without repeating. ( If you did not get a journal last week, we have a few more.  If you are a TMK mom who would like to follow along in our thankful journey, there are some extra journals )

·         Start your meditation and memorization of Psalm 145 this week.

o   We are memorizing verse one this week.  We are memorizing in the NASB version so we can say it together.  A hand out with that version is in your mailbox. 

o   Psalm 145 is called the Psalm of praise and is said to be David’s final Psalm. The Jewish people would say it three times a day. It is acrostic, going through the Hebrew alphabet.

o   In your mailbox, there was an outline of Psalm 145 by a Master’s Seminary professor. This is to help you as you meditate on it this week.

o   There was also a handout on praying from Psalm 145. This is just to give you ideas and suggestions for prayer.

o   There was also a handout on praying with the ACTS method.  This is how we will be praying in mom’s time:  Reading scripture and praying it back to God in adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication.  Please familiarize yourself with this, if you are not already familiar with it.

o   Remember to place all the handouts in your PSP binder, so that you may refer back to them. 

o   Julie S. e-mailed everyone Psalm 145:1 to print out on a 3X5 card. You can post the verse somewhere visible this week, so that you can work on memorizing it.

·         Library card applications were on the table. 

o   Students will not be able to check out books unless you sign the form. 

o   Starting next week, everyone will be able to check out two books at a time.

o   Books will be due back after two weeks.

o   There will be late fees for overdue books.  Encourage your students to be responsible for their library materials.  If they do incur fees, consider having them earn the money.

o   The library will be available from 12:30 to 1:00. 

o   Hopefully, library cards will be ready next week.

·         Picture day is next week!

o   Remember to arrive early (8:15) for the group picture on Friday. We will be meeting by the fountain.

o    Do not drop nursery children off first.

o   You need one envelope for every person ordering pictures. For example, if you are ordering pictures for two children and a teacher ID, you will need three envelopes.

o   Teacher and students ID’s are $5.

o   There is a schedule for the day on the picture day flyer.

§  After the group picture, TMK moms along with 5^th-12^th grade students and coordinators will be photographed.  

§  At 9:30, all other moms and teachers will be photographed. 

§  The moms’ time speaker is scheduled for 10:30.  If you are still in line to get your picture taken around this time, you should head back to the moms’ room for our speaker. You will be able to get your picture taken when the speaker is done.

o    Please do not wear “Choosing Gratitude” t-shirts. Wear regular PSP uniforms.

·         Students may not bring cell phones to PSP.  Students may not have cell phones or other electronics on their person. Have them leave their cell phones with you.

This week is your last chance to sign up for the Children’s Hunger Fund and Legoland field trips.

o   You will need to sign up by 12:30 this week (September 14,) as Susan will be purchasing the tickets that afternoon.

o   The new Legoland student price is $6. If you already paid, you will receive a reimbursmant when you receive the rest of your reimbursement for adjusted expenses.  

o   Susan will be handing out tickets for Legoland at PSP, so we will not be entering the park as a group.

o   You can arrive any time you like, but the park does close at 5:00.

·         The business class is in the process of choosing a name for their student store. 

o   Make sure you are checking out their table each week to see what new things they are selling.

·         In Grace Grill, junior high students may go through the adult line, as long as they are responsible with this privilege. 

o   If they go through the adult line, however, they cannot purchase what is on the hot lunch menu. The hot lunches need to be ordered in the morning, so they will need to do so at that time. 

o   They may get one refill on drinks.

·         If you see trash around, pick it up. Remind your children to be picking up as well.

·         Each month, we will have a prayer partner at our table.  Half sheets will be in your mailboxes, so you can write down your prayer need. Focus on how you would like to grow this year. We will each be praying for one person’s need each month.
