I.
Reasons to Memorize Scripture
A.
Memorize Scripture because it is the Word of
God
I Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by
God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training
in righteousness
Heb. 4:12 For the word of God is living and
active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and
of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions
of the heart.
B. Memorize Scripture to transform our minds.
Proverbs 23:7 “as a man thinks within himself,
so is he.”
Isaiah 26:3 You keep him in perfect peace whose
mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Phil. 2:5 Have this mind among
yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus
Rom 8:5-6 For those
who live according to the flesh set their minds on the
things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their
minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind
on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life
and peace.
I Peter 1:13 Therefore,
preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded,
set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation
of Jesus Christ.
Phil. 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever
is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if
there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about
these things.
Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the
will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself
instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment

he stands up and says: “Self, listen for moment, I will speak to you.” The main
art in the matter of spiritual living is to know how to handle yourself. You
have to take yourself in hand, you have to address yourself, preach to
yourself, question yourself….you must remind yourself of God, who God is and
what God is and what God has done and what God has pledged Himself to do. “

Memorize
Scripture to help fight against sin.
Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young man keep
his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek
you;let me not wander from your commandments. I have stored up your word in my
heart,that I might not sin against you
D.
Memorize Scripture to evangelize the lost
I Peter 3:15…always being prepared to make a
defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.
Romans 10:17
So faith comes through hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.
E. Memorize Scripture to prepare for persecution
and suffering
2 Timothy 3:12
Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted.
Romans 5:3-5
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that
suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character
produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been
given to us.
Romans 8:17
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with
Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified
with him.
F. Memorize Scripture to obey the command to
meditate on Scripture
Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you
shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according
to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and
then you will have good success.
Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who walks not in the
counsel of the wicked,nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits
in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of
the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is
like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its
season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
G.
Memorize Scripture to preach the gospel to yourself daily
If
there’s anything in life that we should be passionate about, it’s the gospel.
And I don’t mean passionate only about sharing it with others. I mean
passionate about thinking about it, dwelling on it, rejoicing in it, allowing
it to color the way we look at the world. Only one thing can be of first
importance to each of us. And only the gospel ought to be.

Memorize Scripture to better train your children
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words that I command you today
shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and
you shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way,
and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Memorize scripture to encourage other believers
and for comfort
Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be
gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each
person.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power
of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Reasons Why We don’t Memorize Scripture
A. Poor
Time Management
Psalm 90:12 so teach us to number our days that
we may get a heart of wisdom.
Ephesians 5:15
Look carefully then how you walk not as unwise but as wise making the
best use of the time because the days are evil.
