The dads’ pancake breakfast is coming up on
February 2, at 8:00 a.m.
o
Do not forget to sign up.
o
There will be a sign up sheet on the table for
the next few weeks.

You can also sign up by e-mailing Brian Rush.

The cost is $5 to help cover the cost of food.
o
It will be a casual time of getting to know
other dads.

Encourage your husband to come to the field
trips when they are able. There are a few field trips coming up that dads might
particularly enjoy: the CA Science Center: Endeavor and IMAX, the Reagan
Library with Air Force One, and the USS Iowa.
·
The government class will be doing a mock
election.
o
The students will plan as though they are actual
politicians in a presidential campaign.
o
They will have a primary election.
o
On the
day of the speech meet, all the students running in the primary election will
give quick 2 minute speeches.
o
They will not be dealing with actual political
issues but rather fun things like how to improve the PSP.

The testing company is requiring that all people
administrating or helping to administer the SAT testing be certified.
o
In order to be certified, you need to have a bachelor’s
degree.
o
If you have a bachelor’s degree, go to the Bob
Jones University Press website and sign up to be a test administrator
(bjupress.com and click on the testing section). The process is simple and will
only take a few minutes.
o

Speech Meet
o
Registration is closing next week.
o
There are resources for poems on the table in
the moms’ room. They may give you an idea of what is appropriate.
o
Choose something appropriate for your child.
o
Start by having them read the selection every
day.
o
Next have them practice, and work on
enunciation.
o
Judges will be sitting in back, so teach your
child to speak out.
o
Students will be judged on whether they have the
selection memorized well, enunciation, eye contact, body posture, etc.
o
The speech meet will be grouped by families and
not age groups.
o
Students who do a stellar job will be able to
perform for everyone.
o
Have students memorize the name of the selection
and the author’s name, so they can introduce their piece.
o
It is a uniform day.
o
There will be no nursery care, but be mindful of
little ones and the noise level.
o
Judges
are needed for the speech meet. Angela and Brenda may approach you to be a
judge after they form the groups.

Professor Jay Wegter (The Master’s College) will
be giving a seminar on world-proofing yourself for college. It will be on
February 9, from 9-12 at Grace Baptist Church in Valencia. It is free for
students. Flyers will available next week.

Old yearbooks ($5), GCS sweatshirts ($10), and
GCS t-shirts ($5) are available. Make
the checks out to Julie S.

Mark your calendars now for SAT testing
(4/22-4/23).
o
Plan on being here all day both days.
o
Everyone will be helping out is some way.
o
If you have a bachelor’s degree, get certified
to administer the test.
o
Scoring
High is a preparation resource available from Rainbow Resource, if you
desire to have your children take practice tests. Be sure to order the right
volume and grade level. We take the SAT
10. (Check with your table leader if you are unsure of what to order.)

Next week:
o
Bring your prayer partner sheets filled out.
o
Have chapters 4-5 of Choosing Gratitude read.
o
Have Psalm 145:1-12 memorized. If you have not
been memorizing, do not be discouraged. Start with the second half.

Second semester tuition is due on February 1.
You can pay in the church accounting office before that.

May 28, is advancement night. Plan to be at
church most of the day that day.

If you have a child graduating (6th,
8th or 12th grader), remember to pick out 10 pictures for
the slide show. Give the pictures to Jen Testa.

June 15, is the used curriculum sale at the
church.
·
As we enter cold and flu season, try to decide
by 6:00 on Thursday evening if you are not able to come to PSP. Please e-mail
the appropriate person, so that you can cover your responsibilities at PSP.
·
Andrew Pedewa (IEW) will come to Grace Church to
offer workshops for students if enough people are interested. There is a
detailed list of options on the table in the moms’ room. A two day seminar is
$89, and there are also other options. If you are interested, please put your
name on the sign-up sheet in the moms’ room.
·

Please check your assignments and plan ahead.

Sharing Time
o
During the second semester, we are able to share
what has worked and what has not worked over the first semester. We will be
taking some time to share curriculum.
·
Christine R. shared some of her favorites.
o
A resource for younger children is Big Truths for Little Kids by Susan
Hunt.
o
The Miller series: Prudence
and the Millers and Wisdom and the
Millers are two of her favorites.
o
Christian
Heroes Then and Now series.
o
Seeds lyrics are available to print from their website.
It is a great way to help your children realize all of the verses they have
memorized.

You do not need a fancy Bible curriculum. Your
Bible curriculum should start and end with your Bible.
o
For example, she and her family completed a
study of Proverbs. They took 1-3 verses a day. They read and discussed them.
They also made a topical notebook. They made categories like laziness,
diligence, discipline, greed and rewrote each proverb under its topic.
o
They have also done a study of Psalm 119. For
each verse, they completed a chart with one column listing the verses name(s)
for Scripture, the second column listing the verbs for our actions/response and
the third column listing God’s promises/ God’s actions.
o
The National Bible Bee (summer program for
Scripture memorization) is another great resource. It also has inductive Bible
studies. You will all be invited to participate this summer.

The Mally’s have written some great books: Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends,
Before You Meet Prince Charming, Write Upon My Heart. These books focus on
character development rather than Bible study.
·
Answers in Genesis offers a Pilgrim’s Progress study with a corresponding Bible study.
